History of Saint Andrew

Saint Andrew was the first of the disciples to follow Jesus. As such, he was the first Christian. Not much is known of him, either from the Bible or history, but we do know that he was teaching the Gospel in the Middle East and in Greece, and that he was arrested for sedition and heretical beliefs and was crucified. It is said that he felt that he was unworthy to die on the cross as his Lord, upon the Roman cross, and asked to be crucified upon a saltire, an X-shaped cross. His wish was granted. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of many countries, including Greece, Byelorussia (Belarus) and Scotland. Scotland devised its flag as a white saltire on a field of blue.

Founding of the St. Andrew's Society

Alex McTavish, Edison MacFarland, Donald Calavan, Bob MacDonald, Howard Allen, Hugh Allen, Tom Ross, Sherwood (Shakey) Johnson, and Ron MacDonald organized the Society on March 25, 1982. On the evening of March 26, 1983 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Sacramento, California, the Charter of the Society was established. Eighteen members signed the instrument of the SAINT ANDREW’S SOCIETY OF SACRAMENTO, beginning its existence, using an example of the Charter of the Saint Andrew’s Society of Washington, D.C. It was incorporated in the State of California in July, 1983. A check of State archives indicated that there had never been a Saint Andrew’s Society in Sacramento before this time.

Investiture

The Investiture of the Society occurs annually as near to St. Andrew's Day (November 30) as possible, provided there is at least one new member to invest. This ancient ceremony dates back to the 12th century. It is the instrument of investment of the brotherhood of St. Andrew. Candidates, who have satisfied the requirements for membership and succeed in election for membership, take the oath of membership into the Society before being invested. This ceremony is only open to members, the candidates and members of their immediate family. This dinner is very strongly encouraged to be attended by all members.
